Afraid Your Employees Are About to Jump Ship?

DSC_0648Good employees are the most valuable asset you have, right? So in this competitive job market, what are you doing to ensure your employees are satisfied and engaged enough not to jump ship?

With the unemployment rate at such a low level, workers are more willing to change jobs for pay increases or better benefits or a better fit. These days, employees aren’t staying in a job as long as they used to which means retention is getting harder and harder. Therefore, the need for worker retention strategies is more important now than ever!

Employees leave a job for many reasons – some preventable and some unavoidable – with some of the biggest reasons being 1.) a bad manager, 2.) an opportunity to make more money and 3.) no opportunity for growth. The key to retaining employees is knowing the factors and proactively taking steps to contactually improve the employee experience and avoid losing great talent.

Here are tips on how to retain employees and gain more in the future:

  1. Offer better compensation. It’s a wage war right now and even a small increase in wages can be enough to entice employees to change jobs if they don’t feel invested in their current companies. Be sure to be frequently evaluating your compensation levels compared to your competition or you are more likely to lose highly skilled employees. A poll by 60 Minutes and Vanity Fair found that money is the biggest motivator for employees and 35% of respondents said it’s the most important thing when looking for a new job. You need to be paying employees what they are worth before they find a better offer and it’s too late for you to convince them to stay.
  2. Realize generational differences. Compared to older generations, millennials tend to change jobs more frequently and to leave a job after a brief period of employment rather than remaining loyal and staying with the same employer for years on end. That is due in part to the increasing burden of student loans. But employers also need to recognize that millennials and baby boomers most likely value different things in the workplace so they may be more successful at employee retention. It’s critical to keep millennials engaged with what is going on in the company. Team building, effective communication and providing a sense of direction are all key components to earning the loyalty of the younger generation.
  3. Present opportunities for learning and growth. Retention has a lot to do with your company’s responsibility of providing a strong culture and high engagement for your employees. You need a career plan for each employee. When employees join a company, managers should take the time to discuss their long-term opportunities for growth and advancement. Successful companies give employees frequent chances to voice frustrations, share concerns and receive feedback. Weekly one-on-one meetings can also make a significant difference. Training and mentoring programs give employees the feeling the company is investing in them and that helps form a stronger employer-employee relationship. And when employees see their jobs as relationships, they’re less likely to leave without a second thought.

It is definitely a workers’ market and nobody wants to be caught off guard with news from a great employee that they are leaving the company. So take the time to understand the reasons why employees leave and address the issues. If you invest in your employees and their well-being you will definitely get a return on that investment!

Well, it’s a great time for it. According to Glassdoor’s newest job trends report, there are roughly six million jobs to be filled right now, which is a record number. Companies are seeking top talent and it’s a candidate’s market.

So if you’re ready to throw your hat in the ring, here’s what you need to know about how to job search in 2017:

  1. You must use social media. You must! In an article that appeared on muse.com, author Jenny Foss says, “If you’re not on LinkedIn, you very nearly don’t exist.”Think it’s an exaggeration? Think again. 90% of recruiters use the site as their primary search tool. Make sure your profile is well written and up to date. And make sure your Facebook and Instagram pages are reflective of the image you want to project.
  2. When in doubt, apply. There is a dearth of candidates on the market right now, so use this to your advantage. Apply! Read the job description and ensure your resume is reflective of all the skills and requirements that are relevant. Showcase your strengths. Apply beyond your city – for many positions, location is no longer a deal breaker.
  3. You may not immediately interact with a human. Electronic applicant tracking systems and chatbots may be handling the first round of screening. Just be aware.
  4. You will probably take some tests. Companies want the right fit – skills, personality and behaviors may all be assessed. Be prepared and be honest. You don’t want a bad fit any more than they do.
  5. You must move quickly. The job search process is a dynamic animal and companies are paying attention to how quickly you respond. So stay connected and respond quickly and efficiently to any requests for information.
  6. You will probably be pleasantly surprised. Employers are working hard to get top performers. Salary, benefits, perks, on the job training – all on the rise. Enjoy the treatment, but don’t become overly-confident. Being unreasonable in your demands won’t serve you well.
  7. A thank you note is still essential. Yes, it’s 2017, but some things never change. Sending a thoughtful, personalized, timely thank you note to everyone you interview with goes a long way.

When Hiring, What Would Warren Do?

Buffett, that is …

Friends, the Dallas/Fort Worth economy continues to be strong. In January, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas reported that DFW employment grew 2.7% in 2016—more than a percentage point faster than the state at 1.6% and the nation at 1.5%. DFW unemployment is a low 4.4%, which is below the national average.

Great, right? Well, hold on.

IMG_9010If you are an employer in need of strong employees, it’s not so great. Competition is tight, and that makes hiring key positions and growing your business much harder. In fact, in an article entitled “Attracting Top Talent A Top Threat to DFW Growth,” the Dallas Business Journal made a sobering point – the tight employment market makes for a small talent pool, and the tenuous viability of our future workforce is one of the top threats to North Texas’ continued prosperity.

So, for employers looking to fill open positions, what is the answer? Well, in this case, we need to channel Warren Buffett. Yes, thatWarren Buffett – legendary investor, businessman and manager.

In his famous 10% speech which he frequently delivers at college commencement addresses, Buffett lays out the three things he looks for when hiring people: integrity, intelligence and energy. His thoughts:

  • Intelligence is obviously the easiest of the three to identify. College performance, grades, test scores – these are all easy indicators of one’s ability. At some point, everyone you are considering hiring is intelligent enough to do the job. Intelligence is not enough in and of itself.
  • Energy as defined by Buffett is “being someone who takes initiative.” A person who makes things happen. A person who is entrepreneurial. A person who is willing to work.
  • But the most important of these in Buffett world is integrity. He stresses that an employee who does more than is asked, is honest and is generous, is worth their weight in gold.

So, if we are to subscribe to this theory, what does that mean for our hiring processes? In short, it means we have to think outside the box a bit more. If a candidate is smart, hard-working, and has integrity, it is worth taking a chance on them even if their skills aren’t exactly aligned with your job description.

Consider this: in the article entitled “Seek These 7 Character Traits to Avoid the Risk of Bad Hires,” the discovery of “hidden gems” by virtue of non-traditional hiring criteria is stressed. The story of John David King, COO of Fishbowl, was cited – prior to being hired, he had no prior experience leading a sales organization when he was hired 10 years ago. He did, however, have “heart, spirit and character.”

Something to think about, isn’t it?

So … don’t let the tight labor market get you down. Instead, ask yourself, “What would Warren do?”
